The
Port Adelaide Football Club is arguably the most successful
senior football club,
not only in South Australia but Australia-wide.Since its first
game in 1870,
the club has gone on to win an Australian record of 34 SANFL
premierships (up until 1997)
In 1997 they joined the country's national competition - the
Australian Football League.
The Power and Magpies share the past of Port Adelaide from 1870-1996
a long , proud and successful history.
On joining the AFL, teal blue and silver were added to the famous
black and white,
along with a new nickname, "POWER", to avoid a clash
with the Collingwood Magpies.
In 2004 they won their first premiership in their 8th season
as an AFL team. |

Power to rule
Come on
Port Adelaide aggression
We are the Power from Port
It's more than a sport
It's the true Port Adelaide tradition
We'll never stop, stop, stop
Till we're top, top, top
There's history here in the making
We've got the Power to win
We'll never give in
Till the flag is ours for the taking
POWER!!!

With
our tradition so strong
We can't go wrong
We're the Alberton crowd
Port Adelaide proud
And the heroes are those
Who've earned the right
To wear the silver, teal
And black and white
And the Port supporters
Standing tall
True believers One and all

I'm a Port Adelaide
fan. I'm a current member. I live in Sydney but that hasn't
always been the case.
I grew up
in Sydney the Rugby League heartland.
Somehow the game of Aussie Rules used to get my attention once
a year
when they used to broadcast into Sydney live for the grand finals
in the
seventies. That used to excite me no end and I developed a liking
for the
Collingwood football club. I loved the way they played and the
clubs pride
and loyalty. No one knew what I was about to discover years later
that would
blow me away. This helped me to develop a wanting to play the
great game.
I did this at school through the weekly sports session which saw
us play
other schools in the district. As this was a new sport introduced
into schools
we copped a fare bit...the usual taunts of "ah you play aerial
pingpong"
"that's a wussies game and so forth. But my love for the
game just got
stronger.
Well I left school and in my search to find my bearings I ended
up
in Adelaide. I was in my element there because it was Aussie Rules
all the way
with no league spoiling the party. I'm back living in Sydney but
Sydneys'
attitude is now changing and has come along way since the seventies.
But going back to going to South
Australia...I found myself watching the
fantastic football being played in the SANFL. I even worked with
a guy who
played first grade for North Adelaide. One club caught my attention...do
I
have to say it?
Yes Port Adelaide!
When I was asked to go to the Friday night footy and watch Port
go around
I didnt think twice, I was there, the atmosphere was electric
and the supporters
...well they just blew me away, they bled tears of joy with every
win or bled with
every loss. It surpassed by far my Collingwood connection . I
knew then that
the club that gave me this kind of high was and is the club that
I support to this
day and needless to say I will always follow and support. In 1997
when they
became a part of the AFL, well I started "bleeding teal".
Now I could see my club
being showcased in the best sporting competition in the land and
Port Adelaide did this without sacrificing any of its history.
My mission still remains the same...to help my club win premierships. |

The
Port Adelaide Football Club - "the Magpies"
is one of South Australia's most successful
Australian Rules Football clubs in History. Since
the club’s first game in1870, the club has gone
on to win an Australian record of 36 SANFL
premierships including six in a row and achieve
the honour of being Champions of Australia on
four occasions
It all began back during April 1870 when Messrs.
John A. Rann, George Ireland and R.W.J. Leicester
met on the North Parade at Port Adelaide and
discussed the formation of a sporting social club
for the young men of the district, hence the
formation of the Port Adelaide Football Club.
|
|
In
1997 the Port Adelaide Football Club Ltd (Power)
was formed and joined the AFL with the Magpies
continuing in the SANFL as the Port Adelaide Magpies
Football Club Inc, with both clubs now sharing the
history from 1870 to 1996.

Object of the game
The object of the game is
to outscore the opposition.
(funnily enough, that would be the object of almost every sporting
competition).
Teams
Each team consists of eighteen players with an extra four players
on the interchange bench.
These interchange players can come on and off at any stage through
the match.
Scoring
A goal is scored when a player kicks
the ball through the two tallest upright posts.
Six points is given for a goal. If the ball passes either side of
the tall posts, a behind is
registered. The total score is the addition of goals and behinds.
For example: 3 goals, 2 behinds =20 points.
Strategy
The ball is bounced in the
centre of the ground to commence the game.
The players then try to move the ball towards their goals by either
handpassing, which is
holdingthe ball in one hand and punching it with the other hand, or
kicking it.
If a player kicks the ball and another player, either his teammate
or the opposition catches it
(called a mark) then that player can stop play without fear of being
tackled by the opposition.
When a team has the ball within reach of goal, usually 50 metres and
closer, they then try to
kick a goal. Unlike AmericanFootball, the game of 'Aussie rules' is
conducted at a fast pace
with minimum stoppage.
Game time
A game consists of four quarters
of twenty minutes each. Time on is added when a goal is
scoredor a bounce up is conducted.
Rules
Below is a list of some free
kicks that are given during the game.
A free kick is awarded to the opposition
for the following.
-
Pushing an
opponent in the back.
-
Tackling an
opponent around the neck.
-
Throwing the
ball.
-
Being tackled
fairly by your opponent and then dropping the ball.
-
Being tackled
by your opponent when you don't have the ball.
-
Kicking the
ball out of bounds on the full.
-
Running
with the ball for more than 10 metres without bouncing it
on the ground

The Creed of the Port
Adelaide Football Club
We the players and
management of the Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club
accept the heritage which past players and administrators have
passed down
to us. In doing so we do not intend to rest in idleness but shall
strive with all
our power to further this club's unexcelled achievements.
To do this we believe there is great
merit and noble achievements in winning
the premiership. To be successful each of us must be active,
aggressive and
devoted to this cause. We agree that success is well within
our reach and have
confidence that each member of both the team and management
will suffer
personal sacrifices for the common end. Also we know that should
we, after
striving to our utmost and giving our everything, still not
be successful, our
efforts will become a further part of this club's enviable tradition.
Finally we concede there can be honour
in defeat, but to each of us honourable
defeat of our club and guernsey can come only after human endeavour
on the
playing field is completely exhausted."
